Special Education Endorsement

The education department at Sweet Briar College now offers a Special Education-General Curriculum K-12 Add-On Endorsement to the elementary and secondary licensure programs. Because of a critical shortage of special education teachers in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the interest expressed by teacher candidates to learn more about the needs of special education students, the proposal for the program was developed. Approval was granted by the Virginia Department of Education in June of 2008.

The endorsement requires five professional studies courses — one of which is already a component of the elementary and secondary licensure tracks — which provide hands-on field experiences working in classrooms with special needs students. The courses are as follows:
